Displacement mapping

It is always rewarding seeing my repeat patterns on a product, this time I will be using photographs from hospitals. It was actually really hard to find good photographs with high restitution so some of the displacement mapping isn’t as successful as I hoped.

It was quite hard to find images of young children under the age of 10 so I decided to do young teenagers. First I have done the gowns and then I thought I would carry on with the socks. I am not as happy with this outcome.

I really liked this photograph, the patterns look quite good too. My favourite one is the middle one with red and orange swans repeat.

I really like this girl, even though she is in a hospital gowns she is smiling. This is a good photo for my collection. I tried two different repeats I think the red and orange one with swans suits it better. I have also changed the colour of the background because it looked a bit out of place around the hair and removed the logo.

I also like this girl because of her happiness. I tried putting a pattern on to a gown but the surface was too small so it didn’t look as effective so I’ve tried it on the bedding and I am quite happy with the outcome. I want to try out more interiors surfaces for displacement mapping.

I decided to do displacement mapping on to bedding. It looks good but I am not as happy with it as I expected to be.

I decided to move on from the bedding and try hospital curtains. First I’ve done the bottom right one but not all the patterns worked with each other and the order of the patterns didn’t work quite right. I really like the outcome on the left.

Swan

Swan with flowers and leafs motif looks so cute. I decided to use a simple half drop repeat and added the leaves as a background. I have also mirrored one of the columns to create variety in my designs.

Changed the colour of the swan and used less flowers as a motif. I think the yellow and red complement each other very well. Decided not to use the flowers in the top layer but as a background. The yellows swan repeat looks quite effective but plain. I also like the multi-colour flower repeat. After adding them together I think it is too busy, maybe if I played with scale and fading more.

Orange and red swans. I made quite a single motif and decided to repeat it in strait vertical lines. It looked quite plain so I decided to play around with the same repeat and fading out tool again. I think it works for this design very well.

After changing the colours of motifs I decided to rotate the motif 90 degrees. I think it works quite well so I played the colours.
swan vertical lines purple green (blue green)
I added the two repeat patterns on one, it looks really crowded. Played around with the opacity in the background layer at 40% and it looks much better.
I have done the same with the purple version of the design. I don’t really like how the colours work together. Even though they are faded out they transferred in to very bright colours which doesn’t work for my collection.

I really like the random swan repeat however it looked a little bit plain so I decided to add some big scaled leaves as a background and change the opacity to 80%. Then thought it looked quite dull so I decided to use some vibrant red, I quite like the outcome of this one.

Flamingos

Random flamingos. The flamingo translated amazingly in to Photoshop. Had a little play around with multi-colour then decided to do yellow and green only.

Half drop mirror flamingo pattern looks good but it needs a background. Decided to use some of my mark making but it didn’t quite seem right.
Then I decided to add a similar colour as the base colour. Also tried just base colour without the mark making.

I thought why not use the pattern I already have as a background? It look a little too busy so I faded the back layer 80%. Still didn’t look quite right so I decided to fade the bottom layer even more to 60% and made the top layer bigger. I am really happy with this design I think it would work very well on many surfaces not just hospital gowns.

Alternative colour ways. Using colours out side my colours pallet was quite fun as it really showed how the pattern can progress in to a lot more surfaces. I really like all 3 options and how different they are but I think my favourite one of the navy and orange on the right.

Decided to play with scale by making the repeat small. Played with colour and also added the previous pattern on it. I think it’s looks too busy even after fading the bottom layer.

Swan with flowers and leafs motif looks so cute. I decided to use a simple half drop repeat and added the leaves as a background.

New drawings

After getting my feedback I was happy with the grade but I wasn’t happy with the work I produced. I wanted to work on it more and happily we had few weeks of independent study. I decided to do some more drawings showing more techniques which I can then translate in to motifs and patterns in Photoshop,

Flamingo, painted using acrylic paints. I’ve used a pulling technique to create texture. I am really proud of it however I think I need to work on the feet/claws a little bit more.

Parrots. I created those parrots using dry paint pulling technique. I like the textures on the wings and bodies of the birds but again I need to work on the claws.

IMG_6001

Parrot in watercolours. I wanted to experiment with a different media so I chose to use watercolour to represent the vibrant colours. I used a black fine lined for outlines as I wanted to show detail of the wings.

IMG_6002

Parrot in acrylic. I decided to do the same parrot in acrylic again as I feel like my acrylic painting skills are better. Also I think it work better for the collection I have in mind.

IMG_6003

I created this swan using acrylic dry paint pulling technique. I am not as proud of this as the flamingo or parrots but I still like it. I think it will look good when I work on it in Photoshop and convert it in to designs.
The leafs. I decided to do those leafs because I wanted to have variety in my designs. Some of the designs from the last collection seen to similar to me so I will be using the leafs as motifs for backgrounds for some designs.

IMG_6004

I really like the pink and white flowers that I’ve done using dry paint pulling technique. I think they will look good in my designs.

I love daisies. For this one I’ve used the same technique as for the other ones, but I have also done an outline for the petal detail and it makes it look less realistic.
I decided to use more techniques so I’ve used wet paint technique with I don’t think looks as good as it doesn’t create a texture. Also it might not match my collection.

I think this rose it beautiful however it seems to me like the leaves are a little bit out of proportion.
I like this little collection of blue flowers but I think it is too dark.

Devon shirts

Devon Shirts Devon shirts looks like a really good and reliable business with many great offers to chose from, however as a designer I don’t like their website design.

More information

What I did like was the amount of clothing they had to offer, there was more then dozen of categories and after you clicked on one more subcategories opened. They had really good products within the categories too.

offering

My favourite category was Accessories. From bizarre subcategories like umbrellas, ties and badges to my personal favourite dog vest. accessoris

After clicking on a products you get a choice of colours and size, after clicking on a picked colour you can see how many they have in each size. I think is a really idea for when people are ordering more then few garments.

When I was researching the company this little notification kept popping up saying that some one just got a fantastic custom T-shirt. The notification also showed the location of the buyer and it was all over the UK!
